Who can benefit from Occupational Therapy?

Sensory Processing:
The ability to recognize, discern and put meaning to information received from the senses (sight, taste, hear, touch, smell, vestibular as well as proprioception).
Sensory processing is important in everyday life, a few examples are:

Fine Motor:
Using utensils, scissors, writing, buttoning, zippering and tying shoes are all examples that require use of ones hands. Coordination, strength, manipulation, and dexterity are areas assessed.
Hand development and writing readiness are needed to enable age appropriate handwriting. Hand strength, coordination, manipulation and scissor use are examples of readiness skills.
Deficits in handwriting skills include poor letter formation, legibility, spacing and organization on paper as well as poor pencil grasp.

Developmental:
Learning and acquiring age related skills through manipulation of objects and mastery of one's environment are examples of developmental skills. Deficits may be seen in the areas of gross and fine motor skills, socialization, oral motor, cognition and self care skills.
Self Care:
Self care skills is the learning and performance of one’s daily routine including eating, dressing, bathing, tying shoes, buttoning and fastening as well as other advanced daily skills.
Self-Regulation:
The ability to filter out relevant from irrelevant information, use age-appropriate emotional/behavioral coping strategies that fits each situation and allow for healthy engagement within ones environment.
